New Screen Savers

Alright, I would be very surprised if I found out that I was the first person to figure this out, but I haven't seen anything on it here, so here I go, just for the edification of people like me whohave been wanting to do this for a while and not known how. Okay, now to my point:

I was very frustrated with the lack of customizability in OS X's screen saver; you know, only one user definable slide show. So I fianlly decided to go hunting. I found the screen saver modules, where I expected to, in System:Library:Screen Savers, but was cross to find that the folder (and everything in it) is write protected. Opening the modules with ResEdit, however, reveals that they are simply folders of a special sort. But there wasn't really anything I could do in ResEdit, and the modules can't be duplicated. Dragging the modules to the desktop creates a copy that can be duplicated. When duplicated, the module appears as a folder. Opening the folder reveals a folder called contents. That folder, however, will not open. The solution: use StuffIt to stuff the module, then expand it on the desktop (or somewhere else). You now have 2 options:either duplicate the resulting module, or use the contextual menu to "Show Package Contents". (If you duplicated it, You can now open this folder,) open the "contents" folder, and open the "resources" folder to reveal .jpg files of the pitures used by the screensaver. Delete these files and replace them with either aliases to a folder of pictures, aliases of pictures, or actual image files. Close all folders, replace the first part of the name (before .slideSaver) with a descriptive title and drop it in Library:Screen Savers (NOT, System:Library:Screen Savers)

So there it is. Like I said, I am sure I am not the first to figure this out, but I hadn't seen an explanation here before, and I hope this helps out anyone who cares.

I'll let someone with some more time respond to this one...

In the meantime, if you want some cool screensavers, go to Apple's OS X download page and do a search. Some cool ones are StratWars (not Star Wars, Strat) and Plasma Tunnel.

Plasma tunnel is awesome! Just install, roll a nice phatty, activate a "hot corner" and spark up! Emerge from alternate reality 2 hours later...

Yes, Plasma Tunnel is an example of a well made OS X screen saver. I wish Save Hollywood ( which plays Quicktime Movies ) worked as well. It still turns green after a few movies.

    .....um.....

I know it's just ignorance but you seem to know enough to use resedit but you don't know about Packages?

Right click/Ctrl click on the module

    Select "Show Package Contents"

    Ta da!

I just installed Plasma Tunnel... very cool!

It would be perfect if they'd just add the <a href="http://members.fortunecity.com/tvthemes/dr_who.wav"; target="_blank">"Dr. Who" theme while it's running...
