Leopard stall at shutdown

Ever since installing Leopard I've had several issues with my Macbook at restart or shutdown - the screen merely shows the desktop image and the spinning sticks and sits like that until the computer goes to sleep. I have to use the power button to power off manually - something which always concerns me (does it do any lasting damage?). Now my iMac has just done the same. Is this a Leopard issue? Anyone else having a problem?

It could be a networking issue with .Mac sync. Some process waiting on a resource to complete.
