Hi everyone, my first post here. ÀMy name is Yvon and I am from montréal.

So this afternoon I bought 2 macbook, one for me and one for my wife. We also bought an airport extreme router and an external hard drive.

I have a few problems right now since i am a complete newbie.

1. Do you guys have any links for a newbie like me?

I was pretty good on windows, been a beta tester etc... but now I am a little lost!

exemple: I downloaded and install windows live messenger. It was working. But I installed mac update and reboot and I can't find it. Where do we find the programs install?

2. Now my internet work well but with my d-link wireless router. I can't make the airport to work. The light in front of it doesn't open. The light behind where we plug the cable are open no problems. But no the one in front. I tried to reset it, I tried to reset the modem, restart the modem, pug the airport somewhere else etc... I can't make it to work.

Any idea?

Do you think it is defective?

That will be it right now. But I will hae many questions

Thank you

Yvon

Let me be the first to say Welcome to Macintosh. There will be some growing pains, but you'll love it.

Resist the temptation to install Windows and use it as your main OS. Try to use the Macbook for all of your everyday tasks that don't require Windows, like word processing and the internet. Then try to migrate your other workflow to Mac until you can be Windows-free.

Seeing as you intend to use Windows Messenger, might I suggest you use an alternate messenger client? The best one out there by far for Macintosh right now is Adium, which lets you chat on MSN, Yahoo, AOL, and GTalk all within the same program. Unfortunately it doesn't have any video support over the MSN protocol (it does have video functionality through simple integration with a browser protocol called MeBeam). For video support (both sending and receiving, but not A/V) on the MSN network, you can use Mercury Messenger (much better in the latest version) or aMSN (more MacLike than Mercury, but the older version I used had persistent video configuration problems).

As to where downloads go, by default they are downloaded to your desktop.

Remember that when you install Mac OS apps, you need to open the .dmg (disk image) file, then copy the application or the application folder to the "Applications" folder on your hard drive, which is easily accessible on your sidebar. Often when you open a DMG, the sidebar of that window is hidden, and you'll have to click the oblong button on the righthand side of the window to show it.

Hope that helps for now. Good luck with the Airport Extreme.

I didn't know how to install a program, I just doube clicked on it

    old habits.

I have an external hard drive that I want to back up all the things that I want to keep on my windows desktop. Should I format it in NTFS of fat 32?

Yeah, it's really confusing for first time Mac users. Apple really didn't get it right with this one. They should disable launching applications from disk images, or at least give you a warning, "Attention: You are launching the application from a disk image. To fully install the application you need to copy it to your hard drive and launch it from there. Do you wish to continue?" etc., etc.

There's a program called MacDrive that you install on a WIndows machine or WIndows formatted drive. Allows you to access Mac files from the WIndows desktop. Here's the link:

You can download a free trial and see how you feel about it.

Go to Apple.com and watch the 20-min video about Leopard.

Also, since you're in Montreal, go to the Apple Store there with your new Mac and have them show you a few things. Trust me when I say that you will save yourself days of headaches with 90 minutes at the Apple Store. You might have to call ahead and get an appointment with an Apple tech.
