loss of audio - please help

I have this really strange problem. Every now and then all audio stops all of a sudden - itunes stops working alltogether, alerts don't work anymore, movies play without sound. And it's not like I'm doing anything special when this happens.

The only thing I can do is reboot. I've tried unplugging my speakers, (resulting in kernal panics - not a very nice sight), logging in en out, but none of the above works.

my configuration:

Cube G4/500

OS X 10.1.2

Radeon 32MB

640 MB Ram

60 GB HD

Airport

Any help would be very much appreciated

    It's an issue with 10.1.2

Either downgrade to 10.1.1, or wait for 10.1.3

In the meantime, when you lose sound, put the computer to sleep and then wake it up again. This, least on my powerbook, works.

Yeah, happens on my Ti 667 as well. Hasn't happened on my G4/500 DP though. Heh, but it has issues of it's own (crazy clock settings when not on network time, etc.).

I've always rebooted, but I'll try sleeping next time and see what happens.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. Suppose I have to wait for 10.1.3 :-(

I've noticed that this only happens after running iTunes. In fact, here's something strange about it: I can hear the sound while pressing the volume keys on the keyboard. However, by quitting iTunes and then quitting the affected app and relaunchin it, the sound returns.

    Very odd indeed. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I've tried that too, but it didn't work for me. 'Fortunately' it seems I'm not the only one with this problem, so there's actually a chance this might get fixed [thinks 10.1.3 or 10.2]
