Deleting trash extremely slow

I re-installed 10.5 last on my MacBook and did the usual upgrades.

Initially I had my accounts secured with FileVault, but when I wanted to delete files I noticed it took ages just to delete a few files, let alone deleting 3500 or so after a Adium upgrade.

That takes about 15 minutes.

I then shut off FileVault because I thought that might be the problem, but it doesn't seem to be it.

Previously, on my 10.4.10 upgraded to 10.5.x it was all fine, and deleting 3500+ files would only take a second or two.

So, what could cause this? It's starting to get really annoying by now.

More importantly, how can I fix this?

If I need to supply any information about my system and stuff, please let me know.

    Found it!

Not only is there an option to securely empty the trash in System Preferences/Security, but also one in Finder preferences.
