Will probably look like the current one, no? If you think of it, how can they update the design. It is a one button touchscreen (i know a couple side buttons). The only thing that could happen is it gets skinnier and maybe the color changes.

I don't see the current platform getting skinnier, what I do see is more stuff being squished into the box. Remember what is possible chipset wise is exploding in the portable markets right now. In fact I'm willing to say the cell phone processor market is hotter than the desktop market right now. It should be possible to support much more in the same box by mid year.

As for I/O I do believe that one of the problems the current iPhone has is manual control over volume via buttons or a sliding input method. So yeah edge mounted buttons might happen or maybe a sliding adjuster. Another thing that would really be the nuts on an iPhone is support for a flash card or host USB port. Believe me much can be added to the current iPhone.

Now does that mean something that LOOKS extremely different - Nope. What is does mean is the evolution of the design. The current machine form factor could remain around for a long time as one member of the family. So expect to see at least a couple of more iPhones for different markets.

There comes a point where a phone becomes too small and too skinny to comfortably hold in your hands. I would rather see more stuff crammed into the next iPhone than see the phone get thinner. 3G, 16-24GB memory, VOICE DIALING, etc.

I suspect that the from factor of the next generation iPhone will remain unchanged. From an ergonomic standpoint, the design is already excellent.

What we need is revisions under the hood. Everyone expects 3G - certainly if the iPhone is to crack Europe) and 16GB (hey, we may even get a 32GB model!! ) to store all those movies Apple wants us to rent/ buy. But what we also need, almost before any increased functionality, is better battery life. It may be that the iPhone will need a thicker body to incorporate a larger battery, especially since 3G sucks the life out of a phone much faster than Edge.

That said however, the one hardware modification that might improve the iPhone is a better camera with a video facility. If video conferencing is to be viable, then iPhone 2.0 will need a front-mounted camera as well as a back-mounted one.

Perhaps the most significant upgrade to the iPhone will come from software improvements. Things like cut and paste in notes/ messages and the ability to type with two thumbs in horizontal mode would be great. But on the whole, what were looking for is improvements not fixes.

This is Apple's first phone. It has captured 20% of the smart phone market. It took Blackberry years to achieve its market share. Apple has done this well inside a year of launch with its 1.0 version. This is probably one of the most sccessful product launches since the tampon!!!!

I am totally satisfied with my iPhone. It is the best gadget I've bought since Sony's first VAIO ultralight laptop in 1998, the PCG505. I'll definitely upgrade to iPhone 2.0. My daughter has already got her eye on my current iPhone.

agree with the above, didnt apple get a patent where the screen was the video camera??

the iphone with video chat would be another KILLER app. i can't wait till te sdk comes out and the phelora of apps come piling in. did SJ say when the asia launch was to be expected

i thought a 3g iphone would be here march but they must have something for the first anniversary june 08

if sales are slowing----it might be the presence of the iTouch, and people like me waiting for the upgrade.

boy to have video chat voice dialing and software developed for this thing is just WOW!!!

I'd like to see 802.11n in my iPhone.

    And GPS of course.

I think both of those are no-brainers for the next model.

The reason it is EDGE-only is because doing so allowed Apple to use commoditized chipsets. Apple was so secretive about the iPhone, and they would have exposed the project if they went out looking for 3G chipsets.

Also, on the power-drain issue, this is a problem more specific to W-CDMA networks common in Europe than to the CDMA2000 networks more common in the USA. W-CDMA has a wider channel bandwidth, so less power spectral density, so more power to transmit the same distance.

The US networks that have followed the GSM roadmap haven't really updated to 3G, which if they did would logically be W-CDMA. However, W-CDMA runs into spectrum regulatory issues in the USA. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but if Apple is going to go 3G with the iPhone in the USA, they currently only have options in Verizon and Sprint.

It depends on the size and respective power usage of the modules. GPS is a tough one, because it requires a long lock time, during which a lot of power is drained. It also requires a separate antenna. I would put GPS as a "maybe." However, a good deal of location information can be gleaned from a 3G network itself, and all this requires is a little extra firmware. 99% of the phones that offer location services use this method, and not GPS.

I'm not with you. The iPhone already has volume control buttons on the side. Did you mean they might not be retained? I would be very surprised if that happened.

The iPhone is the perfect size as it is. What will happen is more features, hopefully 3G.
