External hard drive not mounting

Hi,

I have a Toshiba USB 2.0 external hard drive that has recently stopped mounting on my computer. At first, it just took longer and longer to be recognized, but now it just never shows up.

I don't really know anything about computers, but I can tell you this:

The hard drive doesn't use an external power source, it just gets the power from the USB 2.0 port

It spins when it first is connected, and then stops after a while

It makes no weird noises or anything

It is recognized in Disk Utility as not mounted

The permissions are for Read/Write

I tried getting another cord for it, but with that cord, it doesn't even spin and the light doesn't turn on. I've also rebooted my computer and tried different computers and different USB ports.

When I run the Disk Utility Repair thing, it comes up with an error message that says:

Repairing disk for ?TOSHIBA_EXT?

*

o /dev/disk1s1

o Phase 1 - Read FAT

o Phase 2 - Check Cluster Chains

o Phase 3 - Checking Directories

Unable to read directory (Input/output error)

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

Repair attempted on 1 volume

0 HFS volumes repaired

1 volume could not be repaired

Is there anything I can do to access the data? I have a whole bunch of DVDs ready in case it suddenly works, so I can get all the data from it. Please help, or tell me if my data is gone for good...

Is the drive FAT32 or PC format? Du can't repair those, just reformat them. Try this: Disconnect all power sources, unplug the charger and pull the battery pack from the 'book. Hold the power switch for 10 seconds. Restore power and at startup, Hold cmd, option, P,R untill you hear the chime a total of 3-4 times. Release and login. plug the drive in and cross your fingers. can you do a force mount? Hilight the drive/partition icon in DU and click the mount button...
