Help with OS 9 and OS X Build 4k78
Help!
I just was given an iMac PowerPC G3 (Blue)/500MHz. It already had OS 9.2.1 (with no install disk) installed on it along with what I gather was the additional applications that came with the install disk. Unfortunately the iMac was also password protected and had a lot of features that were disabled. Thus I could not use the stuff on the system.
I have an original OS X (Build 4K78) which I was told that I could install over the OS 9. Because of all the passwords and disabled features I formatted the hard drive and install the OS X. During the install I got a message saying that I could re-install Classic OS 9 over the OS X.
After the installation it booted up with no problem except I got the message that the system could not find the Class OS. So I followed the instructions that I was told. I restarted the iMac with the OS 9 in the CD slot and held down the C key while it was restarting. It ignored the disk in the CD slot and opened up to the OS X interface. So I tried to do the install by clicking the Install Exec. and got the message that it could not find the Clasic OS on the system.
So I then tried to switch the start up by selecting the CD as the Start up and I got the same result as mentioned above....HELPPPPP! Me Please. I am a virtual newbie in the World of the Mac and I am desperate for some help.

In any case, my recommendations are twofold.
1) Don't worry too much about OS 9. In my (admittedly few) years with OS X, I used it once.
2) You might try to find a cheap copy of a newer version of OS X. I had 10.3 Panther, and it is just recent enough to have decent software support. Very few programs support 10.0 anymore.
Sorry if this was not what you were looking for.
