The frequency used is attenuated by anything in it's line-of-sight to your computer. The more "stuff" it has to pass through, the weaker the signal gets.
If you can use 802.11n you will get much better range than with 802.11g (and b sucks bad)

And G with the Airport is much better than G with my DLink FWIW. My MBP only does G.

i would think just click on the airport logo to show networks. but i don't "see" available networks
this helps when i'm traveling
