Just saw a video broadcast of GDC (Game Developers' Conference) 2008 highlights on Xbox Live...

Some stats were posted that the video game industry brought in 18 billion dollars in revenue last year!!

I don't know if the 10 million paying Xbox Live subscribers were included in those stats. Probably were.

The point is that it was the biggest year ever for the video game industry and there's no signs of a slowdown. The Wii will also continue to bring people who have never gamed before into the hobby.

I think Apple better stop ignoring this industry before it's too late.

Also, there's a lot more spending going on the Xbox Live community now. The movie download library in particular is about to be expanded in a major way. I'm sure Sony will be developing their live service as well if they're smart. The tv and movie downloads in both HD and regular format brings some competition to iTunes.

    The question though is how.

Their only consumer products capable of decent gaming is the iMac and Mac game releases are expensive as well as scarce and there's no sign of that changing because people are unwilling to buy badly supported, expensive Mac games when they can install Bootcamp and get a large variety of cheap well supported games.

Their only realistic options are to put decent graphics cards into the Macbook and Mini lineup or forget Mac gaming.

This means Apple TV, ipod, iphone gaming or making a dedicated console. The first few are not a big gaming market and will make up an insanely small amount of the posted revenue. The console idea will never happen because to get developer support you need a customer base and to get customers you need games. The only way to break the catch-22 is to make a substantial loss and Apple don't like losing money on anything.

I don't see Apple ever making large inroads into the gaming industry - they've demonstrated their disinterest and inability to do so on many occasions.

I vote for "to put decent graphics cards into the Macbook and Mini lineup". Hell, why not the entire lineup?
