Dumb thing I did in OSX

in macOS edited January 2014
Well, I got sick of having to log in as root to edit my system folder. So I went into my terminal. And probably did the dumbest thing

'chown -R jdewind:staff System'

Now, I assigned my group to that folder. so guess what happened when I tried to reboot. It wouldn't because it obvisouly it looking for 'system:wheel' which it is assigned by default when installed. I had to reinstall OSX, I doubt anyone will do something that dumb like I did. but just fair warning

I've done dumb stuff like that on UNIX systems. At least one unix system.

I like to take note of examples like this so I can point out to others the dangers of playing with the Terminal when you don't really know what you're doing.

Well. it was an easy fix though. So I am not too depressed about it. I know how to work in a terminal pretty well. I just REALLY didn't think at that moment.. Thats about the dumbest command line thing I have dumb I admit. But worse things have been done by other people. So if thats the biggest mistake I am going to make in a terminal so be it. I can live with that.

Yes, I agree with that. After I rebooted I about slapped myself. And I had just installed new ram, so I thought I might have had bad ram. So it was a fiasco. Then when I pulled out the ram and it still didn't work. I realized the error. So I think that policy is gonna stick from now on
