I can't get any network access anymore with a properly configured iBook
Hi there.
The bad luck seems to follow me quite a lot these days. Especially when it comes to computers.
I have an old G4 iBook (9/2004) that is now my secondary computer at home. It works quite well, apart from the occasional S.M.A.R.T.- failure of the hard drive. But now I can't get a proper network connection, whether be it LAN or WLAN.
I didn't change anything, no update, no restart, no nothing. From one minute to the other (around 3pm CET today) I couldn't access the iMac via my iBook anymore, and they are directly connected via a LAN cable (and via the iMac the iBook got access to the WWW).
Even with Airport I wasn't able to access the router anymore (even the PING command didn't work).
After a fresh install of Leopard (I had to, I wanted to give the iBook to a friend as a temporary computer, until her MacBook arrives) it still doesn't work.
I tried automatic settings with LAN, then DHCP (+manual address), then completely manual.....nothing. Different cables too.
Airport too doesn't work. I can see the network, but with the right password I only get the "there was an error connecting to network".
So has anybody any tips or hints at how to solve this sun of a beach?
Many thanks in advance, and may the Macs get better instead of worse (yeah, (for me) they lately hit the fan quite good with their ....)
edit: On my iBook I can see my iMac under Shared in the Finder, when I click on it, I can hear the iMac's HDD shortly being used, but the spinning wheel on the bottom right keeps just spinning and no items can be seen.
PS: Has anyone else encountered strange display errors after the graphics update (alu iMac, 20", 2GHz), like a discolouring - to black- Finder sidebar while scrolling around in it (if long enough), or a scrambled display in VLC?

It suddenly sorted out itself by again setting the network preferences to automatic.
Strange behaviour.
And I have a non translucent menu bar in 10.5.0 without any modifications.
What shall I say?
