OS X and MS Works - a lost cause?

My computer was upgraded from OS 8.6 to OS X the other day, and that's when the chaos started. Our office is very works dependant, and we can no longer run it. Running Classic 9.0 in OS X is the purported answer, but the Classic takes another few minutes to start up, and closes unexpectedly 75% of the time the program is tried. Another 20% of the time, the entire computer seizes. Maybe 5-10% of the time I can get through enough to do anything, but only for a few minutes on one database only. This problem is the same on every computer in the office upgraded to OS X.

Does any one have any suggestions at all or even just know what causes this to happen?

I guess this is because MS Works is an old program, no longer supportet and not fully classic compatible. You can get info on all classic compatible programs at Apple.com.

    I have the same problem with some of my pre 1990 games <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

That's what I thought. The only time I've ever even seen MS Works was befre my Junior High school replaced their old Macs with imacs 2 years ago and there were still some really old Macs with black and white screens, and MS Works was running on one of them.

What does MS Works do, anyway? Isn't Office v.X enough for you?

Boy, and it's not like there aren't dozens of other options for office apps like that. What a silly thread.

Then you have a problem. But how one can expect back compatibility for a +12 years old program is another story. You can't expect your old DOS or Windows 3.1 programs to run under Windows XP

Actually old DOS games/programs work fine in Windows XP.

    Hooray for Windows XP.

The other day when I found out that XP was based more on windows 3.x than on 95 I was actually proud of Microsoft.

Finally they fixed all of the Bugs from windows 95/98/me.

If you can't afford MS OFFICE v. X then get Appleworks. You can save into MS format at least.

Or download Office from someone willing to give it to you.

Microsoft Works - the original oxymoron.

I bought that POS back in '95, and it never ran. I hated it.

Appleworks is the same style of program as MS Works, only better and slightly more up to date. It runs natively in OS X.

The fact is that if your whole workflow is based on an 8 year old app, it might be best to stick with System 7 or whatever MS Works was last updated for.
