How to best setup remote shares

I have an Ubuntu "server" with a bunch of folders shared out including docs, pics, media, music, etc. I was just wondering what the best way to have the mac (leopard ) see these as local folders. I guess what I mean is I would like the ~/Documents, ~/Pictures, etc. folders on the mac to point to their appropriate remote shares. I have redundancy / backups in place on the server and don't want to have to put all my data locally on the mac. Am I going about this the right way?
