Command-option-click the Finder icon in the Dock. This will hide every app but the Finder. It leaves you with one Finder window open... not exactly what you want but I think it's as close as you can get.

    Close all windows: Command-Option-W

    Minimize all windows: Command-Option-M

*These only work in the app you are in, they are not global like crawlingparanoia tip*

Before Apple made the clock a menu (a mistake, IMO) you could option-click it to hide all windows. I don't know if it was a bug or a feature, but I found it handy.

I believe there's a dockling on versiontracker that acts like Windows' "Show Desktop" button in the taskbar; it hides everything showing only the desktop.

edit: well, forget that. I just tried "Show Desktop 1.0" and it's the same as cmd-opt-clicking the Finder icon.

In 9 I had a alias of the "quit all programs" file of the speakable items folder... I would click it and all would vanish...

    I loved that ability...

but there is no way to do it in OSX that I have been able to find...

Well, it does quit all your running apps, like you said.

    Yeah...

I tried writing a new "quit all apps" script for OSX but it doesnt understand the commands... I tried converting the script but script editor (both X and 9) wont "see" the file... so I cant get the script code...

And I ---&gt;aint&lt;--- no applescript genius...

I tried learning how to write script myself, but just didnt get the hang of it... and thats was script under 9... i imagine X script would be even more alien to me...

oh well... I guess it will be command (+) Q (x) number of running apps until someone figures it out......

You can just keep hitting Option - H, it's not the most elegant solution, but it works. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />
