I got excited when I saw this post, then saw for what scanners; well, mine is the 1220U Model. No drivers (ScanGear Box) for it. I would like to know why is it so hard. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I had a HUGE battle with aguy from tech support these last few months about MacOS X native drivers. Total git. He was saying that I couldn't download drivers from the US site for my 1240U that I bought in Europe, citing that they were not actually the same thing... when they actually are. Thats besides the point though.

Besides having a totally retarded installer, I can't get Graphic Converter to scan. Photoshop 7b43 works perfectly with it... but I would like something 'lighter' sometimes for a quick scan.

The buttons for auto-launching dont work.

THIS IS clearly marked as beta... although there is no place to give feedback to. Duh.

Besides this, its identical to the Classic version and quality is the same. Calibration seems to take a bit longer... but it could be just my impression.

How do I get Graphic Converter to work with it? Where can I manually place the plug-ins?

Jack always does. Check out the Christmas PowerBook Ordeal and the D-S-Hell Saga that he mentioned. It makes for a very interesting read.

It seems like my Pismo crashes on sleep every time now that I have the Canon drivers installed.

It's completely factual. He just makes it sound interesting with jokes, etc.

I've had absolutely no probs with the scanner drivers and my 1240U so far. I can only scan through Photoshop though... again, does anyone know how I can get Graphic Converter to use the drivers too??

The latest version of VueScan, 2.7.12, includes support for a bunch of Canon scanners. It works great - I just downloaded and tried it on my 670U. Pretty good quality scans.

OF COURSE VueScan starts supporting Canon USB scanners once the drivers are out... doh!

VueScan is great but a bit slow at times.

I tried a 200dpi scan (TIFF) of an image and with pretty much the same settings between the official drivers and VueScan, I cant notice much, if any, difference (in the good sense).

If I cant get GraphicConverter to scan with the Canon drivers, I'll shell out for VueScan. I dont want to book up Photoslop each time to do a few scans.

Yah, I also belatedly discovered the new version of Vuescan after installing those Canon drivers.

[ By the way, is that the worst Mac install experience you've ever had in your life? The Java installer in place of a native one I could handle; blasting a folder onto the root level of the hard drive was rather curious; the two-step installation, with the second step consisting of launching an installed app in order to push a pulsing button, was just bizarre. ]

Anyhow Vuescan seems to work nicely enough. I'd be happy if it were a little more Mac groovy, or just groovy in any way; the guy is clearly spending his time on the back end, rather than the interface. Scriptability would also be nice. But I'm pretty happy with it.

My buck fifty, or whatever it's going for these days.

I am intrigued. Why would one want to pay out extra bucks for the VueScan? Is it inherently better than the Canon s./w.? What does it do that the Canon doesn't?

Has anyone done direct comparisons as such? The reviews on V/T are a bit mixed.

The problem is that Canon released a beta of its drivers, not of any scanning software. So now basically there's TWAIN support for Canon scanners in OS X... if you have a piece of software which scans using TWAIN. Nice if you have Photoshop, or if you buy OmniPage, but otherwise...

It's like the difference between having a printer driver and having software which can print. Sure, you can print, but print what?

VueScan is both a set of drivers *and* a piece of scanning software.

Incidentally, though I haven't tried it myself, reports are that the latest version of GraphicConverter, despite TWAIN support, can't see Canons.
