iMac doesn't burn

Hi,

I've been seeing this post on Apple Discussion board and an earlier post here.

My iMac gives me the message "failed to calibrate the laser power level" whenever, and however, I try to burn a CD.

I tried the language solution listed in the post on this forum, but it wasn't effective.

Also tried the following:

different CD media

burning at 4x and 8x

upgrading to the latest iTunes

using the "burn CD" in the Finder, instead of using iTunes

cleaning and dusting

Two weeks ago, I successfully burned a CD. Now, using the same media and same methods, it doesn't work. It figures that I have to have this CD burned for work by tomorrow! Can't use home computer, as that drive is fried.

Are there any other suggestions? What has happened to Apple?

Thanks, Judy

This is the language fix you tried?

    Quote:

    Open System Preferences.

    Click on "International"

Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,

then drag English back to the top.

Set "Order for sorted lists" to English

Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)

    Close System Preferences

    Restart computer

Seems to work for the vast majority of people, for some reason.

    Hi,

Yup. That was the fix. Didn't work. Been googling since I posted and finding others with same problem. Worked for some, but not for many.

Any other ideas? Thank you! Judy

"Failed to calibrate the laser power level" usually means that the optical drive is no good.
