Mac X - Xerox Parc - 3D interfaces...

Just saw an Open University program (one of the BBC's famous open learning pograms...)

It had a feature on computer interfaces.

There was Xerox Parc! Doing a load of work on 3D interfaces! Looked interesting...3D objects/space on your desktop...web pages side by side on your desktop on 3D objects contextual pages on sides of objects, cone branching navigational again in 3D...3D ebooks that you can open/create/store info/links and close and place again on desktop...2d icons that morph into 3D stuff...portals... Some great stuff discussed in the program about the whole 'testing' and 'philosophical' design issues re: interfaces.

It was quite damning of the command line interface. Heh.

...they managed to scrape up someone from Apple to talk about interfaces...featured Sun, MS and a few developers re: app' interfaces and testing...

I dunno if any info is available on the BBC website but if your interested their might be some stuff on their website if you want to investigate further.

Made me think of some of the current debate going on re: Mac Os X and Aqua.

Maybe Jobs can return to Xerox Parc and plunder some more OS designs for the market consumption.

It would be ironic if Apple did so... 3D Aqua anyone?

I can see 3D as Xerox Parc described being part of the future.

In a few years even 'low end' G5s...and 3d cards could drive the OS 3D interface...

Er...food for thought...

is the most advanced, well thought out 3d os I've come across. You know, besides laziness, there's nothing stopping you from d/ling it and compiling it right now...

It's just PARC now. Xerox disowned them.

I dunno but in a world when your userbase gets totally and udderly LOST in a 2D enviroment I think it'd be a complete disaster for anny computer company to release such a product as of this date... maybe in 15 years or so but MAN I could see my mom ripping out her hair cause she scooted something on her virtual desk and knocked Photoshop3D on the floor and can't find it.

    Yeah.

    Windows 2000 can't multitask.

    It's a myth.

Kick the tires and you end up combusting along with the car...

Hmm. He could be right. If novice get lost in 2D land then 3D land may need to be well thought out...

I'll trust Apple to do it right when the time comes...
