Which X11 install?
I've been thinking about installing X11 so I can use Abiword and I was wondering what people thought about which X11 to install. There's fink, which I've had trouble with in the past (permissions on my mysql installation seem to get screwed up) and gnu-darwin's X11 which seems pretty confusing. After I get one installed, what wm should I use? I know about the rootless thing, but I kinda like seeing a different wm everyonce in a while. Is it hard to install both rootless and rooted servers? TIA.

You still need a window manager in rootless mode. The default for XFree is twm of course. I suggest Window Maker as a good, lean window manager.
I'd go for the nice friendly installer from http://www.xdarwin.org and then install Windowmaker, GIMP etc. using fink, but then again I like to avoid too much mucking about with unix
The problem I've been having with either compiling it myself or the double clickable installers is that there is no software installed and it's a pain to get them working. So the installer has all the software I could want. We'll see....
what's your beef w/ the packaged distributions? How are they flawed?
I do think that GNU-Darwin has some promise, but I'd rather not have my darwin altered to use it. So I partitioned my HD and I'll install it on the other partition. My travails with an X11 install continue...
