Which X11 install?

I've been thinking about installing X11 so I can use Abiword and I was wondering what people thought about which X11 to install. There's fink, which I've had trouble with in the past (permissions on my mysql installation seem to get screwed up) and gnu-darwin's X11 which seems pretty confusing. After I get one installed, what wm should I use? I know about the rootless thing, but I kinda like seeing a different wm everyonce in a while. Is it hard to install both rootless and rooted servers? TIA.

    Compile it yourself.

You still need a window manager in rootless mode. The default for XFree is twm of course. I suggest Window Maker as a good, lean window manager.

    Yeah, Windowmaker is great.

I'd go for the nice friendly installer from <a href="http://www.xdarwin.org"; target="_blank">http://www.xdarwin.org</a>; and then install Windowmaker, GIMP etc. using fink, but then again I like to avoid too much mucking about with unix

I'm going to try to use the gnu-darwin installation. I tried to install it last night using their one step script but sourceforge's downloads are WAY slow and it kept screwing up b/c of it. So now I'm downloading the installer cd from a mirror in czech and it's going much better. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

The problem I've been having with either compiling it myself or the double clickable installers is that there is no software installed and it's a pain to get them working. So the installer has all the software I could want. We'll see....

Although I dislike both package distributions, I'd go with fink over GNU-Darwin if I was forced to pick one...

    Hey Eugene,

what's your beef w/ the packaged distributions? How are they flawed?

Well, I'm back using a freshly installed copy of OS X.1.3 That's what I get for not reading more before f*'ing with my system. GNU-Darwin actually installs itself OVER existing Darwin installations, updating them along the way. This is seriously NOT cool. Sure, it seemed to work ok, but I'd rather not screw around with the core of my OS. So, I reinstalled (a relatively painless procedure) and I'm back to my fresh OS, nearly everything intact. I'm now going to fink, again. Hopefully this time things won't get messed up.

I do think that GNU-Darwin has some promise, but I'd rather not have my darwin altered to use it. So I partitioned my HD and I'll install it on the other partition. My travails with an X11 install continue...

Is there any way to install Window Maker without fink? I downloaded Window Maker and tried to compile. How would I tell Fink to take the files from a directory and not download everything agian?

I think that if you move the .tar.gz file into the /sw/src/ folder and do a fink install windowmaker, it'll look in that directory prior to downloading the file again. It needs to be named the same thing as what it would download normally, so make sure that you have the same version.
