Cant't shut down new macbook

My daughter was running FF this morning and then she tried to quit and shut-down the macbook. I've got this spinning ball on the desktop.

Do you know how to kill this process so I can re-boot or shut-down?

Should I boot from the install DVD and do Command c and run disk utility?

Thank you.

Chances are it's just a fluke. Just hold the power button down for five seconds or so, and the machine will power down.

option-command-escape, that keystroke combo all hit at once will bring up the force quit dialogue box. More than likely FF isn't responding and needs a force quit. Then shut down as usual. If not do as Karelia suggests.

Thank you very much Karelia and backtomac!!

I went home over my lunch hour and my macbook had un-frozen by itself. I will archive your commands and use them the next time this happens.

I appreciate the tips a lot:-)
