Who told you they would not work with your Mac? A few brands I have used or had friends use with their Macs:

    Lacie, WesternDigital, IOGear, Seagate, IOmega.

A few available at Apple and Apple retailers:

    Verbatim, Fantom, GTech

Whoever you were talking to was pretty confused. I have yet to find a FW or USB2 external drive that I couldn't mount and use. You will need to consider reformatting the drive, as most are MBR/FAT32. If you are only using it with your Mac, I would suggest Guid Table with HFS+ Journalled

I've got a Western Digital Passport that is great. It's 250 GB and not too much bigger than a large pack of gum. In my experience it has worked on both my PC and my MBP without any problems.

I use some LaCie drives for video media (FW400, FW800, USB 2.0) , as well as a Seagate internal drive that I installed in an external case to use with eSata. Both work well, but if you are using it for video capture/playback you should format the drive as non-journaled using Disk Utility.

I also have a WD Passport, 320Gb. Works great. Just reformat. I would use Mac OS Journaled. GUID partition table if you only use Macs. If not Partition it with FAT32.

We just bought a bunch of WesternDigital Passport drives for work so we can transfer multi-gigabyte files around more easily. Previously we had to FTP stuff constantly across the network which was a big pain.

The great thing about these kinds of drives is that they're USB powered, so you really can just plug them in and get them up and running with no effort.

WD ones are nice and lightweight too, but feel pretty sturdy.
