OpenOffice for X
Does anyone know why there's no OpenOffice for MacOS X?

It seems to me that this represents the perfect opportunity for Mac users to throw off the shackles of M$ Office, you'd even think that it would be something that Aple would put money/support into to get it working (if you could get wide adoption Apple would no longer need to develop Apple Works, and you could ease the reliance on MS - OpenOffice free with every system).
I'm not really clear on this open source stuff, but is there no chance for a Mac developer to do the porting and "sell" their enhancement/port?

Not sure what would be involved in the building of it, but they seem to be supportive ...
<strong>Looks like there's a build guide?</strong><hr></blockquote>
Yes, but that's about all there is. If you read throught the X stuff there it essentially says "it doesn't work" - quite a lot of issue not fixed. I seem to recall that it's lagging on the source too.
I think the Win/Linux/Solaris version are almost ready to go 1.0, while the X version is not even really a beta, there's no binaries for it and you're not going to get anywhere with it unless you're a developer (ie it just doesn't run).
