why some shows both 4:3 and 16:9?

i dont understand i just bought an episode of CSI miami and its in 4:3 but all the other episodes ive gotten are in 16:9 format. i also noticed this with gossip girl i got the 1st episode and it was in 4:3 and other episodes are in 16:9. whats the deal?
