New to MAC and need have a couple of questions?

I am a new MAC owner and user - so far, I LOVE it!!! But I am just finding my way around and figuring things out of course!

I know this isn't exactly the MOST important thing in the world obviously

But I would LOVE to be able to use smilies and avatars, etc., when I send out emails, just like I did with our old email address/PC.

I've tried it with our new address (an @mac.com address), but they don't work - the avatars aren't animated and/or just don't even come through and the smilies don't come/go through at all either - mostly everything is a red X.

I appreciate any help - I know this is probably a stupid question, but I love having fun with my computer and I'm realizing that a MAC in particular is SO fun, I'd love to still have this option too!!!!

Thank you!!!!

Are you using Mail or Thunderbird or ???

In either case, make sure your client is set to view html. There are arguments against viewing mail as html, but if you really gotta have those smilies, most come to you as html/attachments.

Psst, hey TheBean. A quick word with you:

You'll want to make sure to use the term "Mac" and not "MAC". Some folks around here can be real sticklers about this matter. "MAC" typically refers to the I.D. that your computer has on a wireless network, so using it to describe the computers that Apple makes gets you corrected fast. Just wanted to let you know.

Speaking of getting corrected fast, MAC addresses are for wired AND wireless networks, not only wireless.

    TheBean, welcome to Apple.

Yes, tell us what mail application you're using (.mac web, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, etc) and we can help you more effectively. When I switched from Windows to OS X several years ago, it took me about 6 months to change my habits and figure out how to do everything a little differently. I'm not one for smilies and avatars but I'll wager that you can do it.

Ok, first of all - thank you all so far for the replies, advice, etc.!

I can see where it is going to take me a while to get the hang of this, I feel like the first time I did owning ANY computer!

I must be using mac web because our email address is xxxxx@mac.com - I think we have a trial version of each available - mac web and Apple Mail and then we'll have to decide/buy the one we like? Is there a reason to choose one over the other?

I'm not even sure what Thunderbird is to be honest??

Anyway, again, thank you for the assistance so far - hopefully that little bit of additional info helps??

    Thanks~

Apple Mail is the program that you see in your applications folder. It is like Microsoft Outlook, in the respect that it allows you to read your Email on your computer, instead of on the internet.

Mozilla Thunderbird does the same thing, although I prefer Apple Mail on Mac.

Both programs are free, although they are not email accounts. Your email account is xxxx@mac.com , which you do have to pay for, it has a $99 a year fee. The email address is part of a ".Mac" account which gives you a few other benefits besides the email.

To use Apple Mail, open the program. It will walk you through setting up the program. After the free trial of .Mac expires, you can set up your Apple Mail to use another account, such as one from Yahoo or Gmail. (In fact, you can set up Apple Mail to handle several email addresses at one time).
