Lack of autofocus is one of those puzzlers, like no voice recognition. I mean, it's just software, it doesn't make the thing bigger or heavier or kill the battery life or mess with anyone's profit centers.
I guess they only have so many programmers, and, as you say, it's not a priority-- but how hard is it to add an autofocus algorithm? It's not like Apple has no expertise in image processing.
Another possibility is that current implementations of things like autofocus and voice recognition aren't good enough for teh Steve and he's holding out so Apple can spring some kind of freaky, AI based auto-everything/friend recognition/voice synthesis/geo tagging/mind reading über deal on the world. Which won't work reliably.
