Safe to upgrade unlocked iphone

Hi



Cant find the anwer to this question but forgive me if its been asked a million times.



Just bought an unlocked iphone (not received yet) but have just read you cannot upgrade them to newer fireware as it will render the phone useless.



Is this still the case or are you now safe to upgrade an unlocked iphone



Hope you can put my mind at ease
