Installed 1gb of memory, MBP ran hotter during charging.

I installed a 1GB stick of 3rd party memory in my 2.16GHz MBP and I noticed that it made the fans come on during battery charging. The memory passed the memtest tests and I had no other issues with it. I ended up replacing it with another 1GB stick from the same maker and this time, not only did the computer run hot during charging, it would reboot at will. So, I took it out and am going to return it.

Some questions:

1) Are Micron and Kingston memory considered to be best or close to it?

2) Why would adding memory cause the fans to come on during recharging and when the 1GB stick passed the memtest?

3) Anybody else ever put in a stick of ram and notice if it cause their fans to come on during charging?

4) I noticed now that I'm back to the original 1GB that came with the MBP, my fans now come on more often. Could I have damaged my system by putting in this 3rd party ram? How would I hardware check my system?
