Dial Up Connection problem-modem unexpectedly hangs up

I've always been able to successfully make a dial up connection to my ISP using the internal modem in my 12" powerbook G4, running OS X (10.5). Without having made any changes to my computer, suddenly I can longer complete the connection. I get the following error message: "The modem has unexpectedly hung up.Verify your settings and try again." I have run the hardware test utility and the modem appears to be fine. Has anyone had this problem and if so, what are the best steps to take to solve it? I have contacted my ISP and they claim nothing has changed on their end that would give rise to this sort of problem.
