Can anyone explain to me why the AppleTV is accounted for on a subscription/deferred revenue basis, and subsequently isn't subject to certain annoyances like nominal fees for software updates?

It apparently has something to do with not being able to realize revenue for a product that shipped one way and then had new features added. Something about "promising" features - I suppose it is considered to be selling something that didn't have the features that were "promised."
I don't remember them promising anything, so it's still confusing.
