Back to school iPod deal?

I am relatively new to the world of Apple and its forums and I recently read something about a back to school promotion where Apple would give students free iPods if they buy a computer. First, how many times has Apple done something like this in the past (if so, details?)? Will it likely happen this summer? I really need to replace my laptop and my mp3 player, but if I could get the latter for free, I would definitely wait...
