802.11a ---How do I change the settings

in General Discussion edited January 2014
know this can not be done via the gui or apple os...It must be changed via the cli or unix layer... I look at the ifconfig and I see the following:

inet6 fe80::21e:c2ff:febf:9bca%en1 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5

inet netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast

ether 00:1e:c2:bf:9b:ca

media: autoselect status: active

supported media: autoselect

I would like to change the autoselect to 802.11a...

Here is the issue: the apple progression for wireless is g,b,n,a if I turn off all other wireless in my house and leave just "a' up and running it can take up to 3-5 min before the macbookpro decides to associate up to the access point... this is not a normal thing in the wireless world...I can change my settings in windows very easily by change the card to either "a-only, b-only, g-only, a-g-only...etc..

802.11a is cleaner and when I move to "N" I want to use 5 ghz vs 2.4...does anyone know how to change the wireless card progression from the cli...

macbook pro Mac OS X (10.5.3)
