Reinstalling OS X from an HDD or flash drive

Hi,

I don't have a DVD drive in my old 800 G4 Tower, so I have to borrow an external one if I have to re-install Tiger.

If I copy my Tiger DVD installation disks to an external HDD or a Flash Drive or an internal HDD (a secondary HDD), would I be able to re-install from one of those drives? Would there be a problem?

About how much space would I need?

I tried that years ago in a similar situation with several G4s that only had CD drives. It never worked. I ended up putting them in Target mode with a Mac that had a DVD player. But I need to ask, how often do you need to reinstall? Is it worth spending the time and effort? And if you have to buy a hard drive dedicated to storing an installation disk, wouldn't the money be better spent on a DVD drive that would have more uses? Just a thought...!

I have the HDD's and the flash drives. I don't need to buy them. I don't want to buy a DVD drive as I intend to buy a new Mac some time this year. Even if it only has a combo drive, that'll be okay.

I really don't intend on installing Tiger often. Recently, I had a slowdown to a snail's pace and Lundy suggested I re-install. That worked. I'm just leery that it'll happen again and I hate to keep borrowing the DVD drive.

In the June issue of MacWorld, it was suggested that some slowdown could occur if there are a lot of files on the desktop. I am NOW keeping my desktop free of too many files just in case.

Thanks for the info on your attempts to install. That'll save me time and effort since I won't try it myself.

I really appreciate AI. It's better than AppleCare because it comes from users who have been there, done that.
