Dual 500 & X ?

Was wondering if anyone happens to have a dual 500 running OS X? [specifically a sonnet duet, but the stock dual is fine also]........??

how does it run?

tolerable?

I'm wondering if I should keep with a 450mhz & sell the dual 500 sonnet, or keep the sonnet, and try and sell the 450?

What would be the point of having the Sonnet accelerator and no machine to put it in?

At MacNN forums there in the hardware section is a fare amount of Cube users and I remember at least one of them posting about using a sonnet Duet and loving it. XLR8 has something about this like how to install it and, I believe that I also have made a copy of that article if you need it. They also stress tested the duet to see what kind of performance they got. I will go to a Duet sometime late this year or early next. OSX Loves dual processors!

How much does a Sonnet card (dual 500) cost? And is it easy to install?

Think that you could find one for $500, or $700 from Sonnet. There is/was a web sight dedicated to this complete with pictures. 'Probably not for the faint of heart' easy. If that is descriptive enough for you. I would post these questions on MacNN Hardware forum, then you will be hearing back from folks that have actually done this not just read about it like me. I don't remember reading much along the lines of cube users on this forum. At MacNN hardware one of the Mods "Cube-Dude" can hook y'all up! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

The cheapest is @ buy.com for 630 i believe? or something around there.

The mod itself isn't too too hard to do, as long as you're comfortable putting together PCs.........

My Mac is a dual 500 (stock dual, not an upgrade card) and it runs OSX great. Public Beta was tolerable; 10.0 was fairly decent; 10.1 is pretty good; 10.2 is even better. I've been using OSX full-time since the leaked 4K5x builds before 10.0 went GM.

Of course, these are all subjective terms. If you would like any benchmarked numbers, feel free to ask.

I would have went the dual upgrade route with my AGP 400 but alas, forsooth my motherboard revision supporteth not dual processors. Alas, is it worse to have no hope at all or to have a brief glimmer of hope and have cruel fate snatch it away?

Starfleet: how tolerable is the dual 500? any comparisons with the sonnet duet?

any rough comparisons against the dual 800/1ghz?

Well...at least genie effects (somewhat) suck on this machine

I can tell you. On a Dual GHz SlowSilver (tm) Sorenson 3.1 Pro compression is like 130% faster than the Dual 500 Mystic  Processor and the better L3 cache really help on this area.

In many areas I see twice the speed.

But in Photoshop I only see the gain of somewhere like 30-60%

    Illustrator.....10-20%

At Sonnet itself they list the Duet at $599.

I guess I have to install OS9 again on my 2nd HD and run the test to see if mine is compatible. I'm pretty sure it is.

    <a href="http://www.sonnettech.com/support/errata/duet_errata.html"; target="_blank">http://www.sonnettech.com/support/errata/duet_errata.html</a>; for the list.

    6. In text view, the last item under the Hardware overview section is ?uni-n: #?. If the Uni-North ASIC number is previous to revision 7, then your system does not support multiprocessing (Figure 4). Revision numbers 7 and above do support multiprocessing. With OS versions prior to 9.0.4, it is possible for the Encore/ST G4 Duet to operate trouble-free with the revision 3 ASIC, but reliability will deteriorate with an upgrade to OS 9.0.4 or later

    7. If your machine is identified as Power Mac G4, then it is compatible with the Encore/ST if it has 4 slots (3 PCI and 1 AGP). This model was identified by Apple in reference literature as the Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet).

If your machine has 5 slots (4 PCI and 1 AGP), then it is not compatible with the Encore/ST. This model was identified by Apple in reference literature as the Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio). These models also have a 133 MHz bus and originally shipped with processor speeds of 466, 533, 667, and 733 MHz. Sonnet has not yet announced upgrades for these machines<hr></blockquote>
