Installing apps on new mac pro

New to OSX. Years ago when OS8.x was new, I took a maintaining/troubleshooting Mac seminar and was told if there were two hard drives, or partitioned hard drive, to create new applications folder on second hard drive/partition and install all apps there. Is this a good or bad idea?

It used to be because it meant your apps were on less fragmented drive space so they should run/launch faster. Nowadays, OS X has built-in on-the-fly defragmentation of small files so you will get very little benefit from doing so.

Another partition is handy if you want to test new versions of an operating system but with a Mac Pro, you can easily just slot in a new drive.
