OK, I JUST installed 10.1.5, and when I turn the brightness all the way down, the screen no longer goes completely dark like it used to. Anyway I can get it back to being able to do this?

The last brightness setting on portables always used to turn off the LCD backlight completely.
I always found this useful when all I wanted to do was use iTunes to listen to music (can't afford an iPod as well). You can get 7 hours of battery life from a TiBook like that.
I haven't installed 10.1.5 yet but if the back light can't be turned off I shall be disappointed.
According to a thread over at Apple's support page, this seems to only be effecting Clamshell iBooks. It do not see anything in displays or energy saver system preferences to get this back. It is really disapointing...I used this feature fairly often.
Turn it down as far as it will go then set the energy saver control panel to turn off the display in five minutes.

Yup. Energy Saver is the (less convenient but functional) answer.
I "turn off" the LCD on my iBook with the brightness controls all the time. I do this to prolong the life of my LCD (actually its backlight), but saving battery is an even more legitimate reason.

OK, but you should still be allowed to turn it off instantly like I could before, not this 5 minutes garbage. I don't know why I should have to open the sys. prefs, change it, then wait 5 minutes for it to kick in, then have to go back into sys. prefs. and change it back to normal when I don't want this, if I even remember to. It was so much easier just hitting the brightness key on the keyboard. I hope Apple changes it back in the next revision. Frankly I think this is stupid and unessecary.
This thread makes me think about another glitch in X that's bugged me up till and including now: the energy saver pref only lets you select a screensaver after 5 minutes, after which you have 5 minutes of screensaver before it goes to sleep. Being the hedonistic simplifist that I am, I'd far prefer just to put the beast to sleep after x time, because I could really give a rat's ass if nobody sees some clever crap on the screen while I'm going to take a piss or answering the phone, and frankly I'd rather just save the battery for something interesting.
cant u just turn on the screen saver that just shows a black screen? thats what i do at night so that i dont lose connection. wouldnt that be basically the same as what u wanted...?

The closest thing I have to that is the "basic" screen saver, but you still have a grey Apple logo, and my name in grey, and it will not let me hit the configure button to get rid of it.
Apple, this was a really lame move and makes no sense.
_Alliance_, no, I don't think that would turn off the backlight.
10.1.6 looks like it's just around the corner! I'm waiting on the upgrade, there are too many problems, like lost monitor resolutions/refresh rates, wackiness with laptops, etc.
And how's the performance? (Let1kwindows bloom, etc)

I'll check that out and post...now that iDisk is faster (the 1 update I really appreciate from 10.1.5) and actually useable even on my dial-up, I'll check it out.
Still, I wonder why the newer iBooks dont have this problem? I wonder if it has to do w/ the better video out features of the newer 'books? Like you can get a VGA adapter for the newer iBooks, right? Maybe it has to do with screen resolution (I am still on 800x600)?
Anyway, thanks for all the replies...I know there is 1 other person on the Apple support forums that is having the same trouble, and we have both sent Apple feedbacks.

This is nonsense as we use a lan. None of my other Macs have had this problem. It is definetly connected to 10.1.5 it is too much of a co-incidence.

ea, the pixels just turn black, the backlight remains on. so you're not saving battery life at all
