OS X FTP Services:

As I understand it, OS X and OS X use totally different FTP services. Is this right?

If I am not mistaken, OS X Server uses the WU-FTP package. Right?

What about OS X (not the server). What type of FTP services does it use? I get conflicting answers. I think it's called "ftpd" right? But who makes it?

Is it a FreeBSD ftp service? (i.e. did it come with the FreeBSD part of X)?

Is it an Apache service? (i.e. did it come with the Apache part of X)? Does Apache come with FTP services?

I am configuring my OS X box as an FTP server, and I am having troubles identifying exactly what FTP services I actually have!

I am fairly certain that OS X just uses the FreeBSD ftp daemon (ftpd)

It has nothing to do with apache AFAIK and the apache webserver doesn't have any ftp abilities.

    I don't know about X Server.

Thanks, that what I figured-FreeBSD daemon. For some reason I heard that maybe it was part of the Apache project, I didn't think that was true. Thanks for clearing this up!

FYI: OS X Server does use the WU-FTP daemon. I think it has better security features (?)

There was a bug with one of the ftp servers that if you logged in from a client and did a

    ls ../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../../*

or something it would crash the server.

I think it was the Washington Uni version. Not sure.. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />
