Yup, it's been announced. Before quad cores were even becoming a standard, Intel is already pushing for the next thing.

    This is how their tick-tock plan is supposed to work. One year Intel introduces a new microarchitecture and the next they shrink the microarchitecture. This makes sense because it allows them to focus their efforts on one area.



    Intel Core microarchitecture

    tick - Core 65nm

    tock - Penryn 45nm



    Nehalem microarchitecture

    tick - Nehalem 45nm

    tock - Westmere 32nm



    Sandy Bridge microarchitecture

    tick - Sandy Bridge 32nm
