How long will the current iTunes activiation work for 1st-gen iPhones?

in iPhone edited January 2014
The current way to activate an iPhone and add it to your account is to go through iTunes. When my dad did it, he just changed the SIM card and went through iTunes - and he wasn't eligible for an upgrade.

I'm asking how long the iPhones will be able to be activated this way because of course, I'm a current ineligible AT&T customer. If I get an old iPhone on July 11th from my friend will I be able to take it home and activate it through iTunes?

Someone said that I would have to pay a cancellation fee but my dad didn't when he got his iPhone. Are they changing that on July 11th?
