I don't remember what exactly Raycer was, but I do remember that the rumors and speculation were that we'd actually get a special chip from Apple just for the GUI, not acceleration of the compositor using OpenGL on existing cards.
I could try to dig up some posts from Future Hardware but I'm feelin' lazy today.
jesus f*ckin christ... how long does it take for you primates to get it through your f*ckin skulls?!?! The Raycer aquisition will NOT produce an 'Aqua Chip'. This is not possible for a half dozen reasons - which have all been mentioned many times by many people (myself for one).
This uninformed speculation based in fantasy by people who have about as much technical knowledge as i have in my penis is getting downright stupid. If you don't know sh*t - you'd be better off reading technical docs than this board - you'd learn a lot more...

I said I didn't remember exactly what the situation was but regardless of what you say there was speculation of a custom chip from Apple. If you've got some technical docs about what Apple does behind closed doors with companies they've acquired, feel free to send them my way. Please, do post some informative links about what Apple is doing with Raycer.

don't get yor undies ina bunch. the question was about quartz extreme and its possible that some of the raycer people came up with methods of making quartz e work with exisitng vid cards so don't have a cow man.
"...the question was about quartz extreme and its possible that some of the raycer people came up with methods of making quartz e work with exisitng vid cards so don't have a cow man."
uh - yea, Raycer was a hardware company - and Quartz e runs on present day hardware developed at other companies... Its possible the Raycer guys came upe with quartz e, its also possible that my old roomate came up with it - he works for apple now... too bad he's in marketing... This speculation is such a reach it just pathetic. This isn't even a rumor, not even a lame made up one. Its just bad fiction.
As far as my over-reaction... well, this came up once before in another thread... and when I tried logic to convince people that Raycer was not going to make OSX quick, solve cancer, and get them laid... their responses were worse. There is nothing interesting to say about Raycer...
uhhh. and there is no software developed at hardware companies?
raycer accellerated open gl.
with quartz e, every pixel window and scrollbar etc is now in the open gl pipeline.
raycer programmers (hardware and software ) were supposedly making opengl faster by "hiding" uneeded open gl data so the chip didn't have to move so many pixels.
so if you have knowledge of this you have knowledge that could potentially help apple's software efforts.
even a grad...errr it doesn't take a rocket scientist to say raycer knowledge could _potentially_ help apple which is all he/i was suggesting before undies started to tighten up.
and when I tried logic to convince people that Raycer was not going to make OSX quick, solve cancer, and get them laid...

Damn it. I could use all three.
While I agree entirely with your sentiment, Raycer may have been a "hardware" company, but it never actually produced any hardware, and the one asset it owned that created all this hype is a patent for a system that could actually be implemented in software. (Although it's unlikely that such an implementation could be fast enough to be useful).
I'd be content if Raycer only helped me get laid. Hell, I'd even upgrade to a new tower if Apple could convince me that it would help me get laid.

Just some friendly advice to some of you out there: if you want to get laid, leave the computer alone, go out, and meet people first. I'm 99% sure sitting at your computer all day and posting on this board won't help you get laid by someone you've never met because you've been sitting at your computer all day and posting on this board. heh Just thought I'd help.

For the price of a new tower you could get a pretty nice prostitute

Take a Valium. The subject of the thread is Quartz Extreme, a software-based solution with existing hardware.
