This is such a simple thing to do i'm sure, but how in the world do you customize what icon a shorcut uses? I hate that standard paper with "A" on it icon for some shortcuts. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    First off, is there a certain file I need to find to replace an icon with. Example - In winblows you have to have files named *.ico to use them as icons. Is that necessary? Can I use one from another program?

    Also when i find one that I like how do I "paste" it in the info screen? Do I just drag it in there or what?

    find the source iconor file whose icon you want to copy. select it and hit apple-i to bring up the show info window. select the icon in the upper left of that pane and copy it (apple-c). now find the file whose icon you want to replace. show info again, select the icon and paste in the new one (apple-v). that's it.

    Yet another one of the thousands of "little things" that make the Mac OS a more enjoyable (IMHO) Operating system to use than Windows?.

    Don't forget, you can do that for any file on a Mac, not just a shortcut

    Use <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=11842&db=mac"; target="_blank">Iconographer</a>.

    Do your drawing in Photoshop, Illustrator, or the like and then either paste the finished product into the Finder's Show Info window or paste it into Iconographer for better masking controls.

    Alternatively, you could use the free IconComposer with Apple's Dev Tools, but it's pretty limited in functionality. It just does straight copying for the various depths, sizes, and masks.

    Another great and fast little Freeware Icon Creation app is Pic2Icon <a href="http://www.sugarcubesoftware.com"; target="_blank">http://www.sugarcubesoftware.com</a>;

    You can drop any of your pictures onto this app and automatically transform them into Icons. Also handy for Batching Icons.

    Cheers!
