First Day Lineups, Buying Experience Thread

Hi all,

I tried to buy a 3G this morning, but I couldn't. I have to leave for the airport shortly, and the line outside the AT&T store (West Chester, PA) across the street was 50-60 people by 7:45 a.m. I have to say I am a bit surprised. It's sort of nestled in this shopping center, and I don't see the store doing much business usually (even though it's new). My plan was to buy one if there wasn't much of a line. Guess I'll be waiting!

Well I tried to pick one up today and my local AT&T store was sold out. It looks like Apple has the white 16GB. Not sure if I'll go pick one up or not. I think I want black, and I wasn't necessarily planning on getting the 16GB.

I waited from 9:20am to 3pm on Friday to get a 3G iPhone. Two strange things while waiting. There

was a woman with her child in line in front of me that waited till 1:45 & then got out of line & walked

away. A couple in front of them got all the way into the store but left empty-handed because their

previous iPhone was being paid for by their work so they had to go to an AT&T store. Apple

employees repeatedly mentioned that to the people in line all day & they still waited...idiots!!!

Arrived Palo Alto Store after 50 mile drive from Santa Cruz at 5:50 AM Thursday morning July 10, 2008. Looked like I was first in the queue until I looked around the corner to find 2 teens waking up from their 9 PM Wednesday night start. I had imagined no one would spend 2 nights there but I was wrong. So I was third. A family of 4 showed up about an hour later to become fourth through seventh. Watched a UPS truck deliver 200 ten iPhone cases - total of 2,000 iPhones about 10 AM. By about 3 PM the queue had grown to about 12. By 8 AM Friday the queue was about 200.

As we entered the store to the customary applause of the army of employees, little did I know how ill prepared the were for out of normal customer scenarios. I had the trifecta or hat trick:

    1. Moving from Verizon

    2. Out of region cell number not where I live

    3. PO Box billing address

    1. PO Box billing not allowed to buy. Worked with my street address where I get no mail ever.

    2. Moving in from Verizon with an area code not same as my home's not allowed to buy. After confering with supervisors, I was told I'd have to go to ATT store to buy my iPhone. I then drove 50 miles over the Santa Cruz Mountains to my Capitola Mall ATT store where they are already Sold Out at 11 AM... To be continued

    My iPhone saga continues.

My local ATT store sold out on day one and got a few more in the next and sold those out as well. Caught me by surprise as my local ATT store did not sell out of the first iPhones during their launch which seemed to be more hyped than this one.

More upsetting is that I've now come to find that I'm NOT eligible for upgrade pricing on the 3g iPhone. I had been to the store once and called corporate ATT prior to release to see if I was eligible for the upgrade pricing. I was told both times that I would be. Turns out that ATT changed their mind at the last minute.

While I'm still going to get an iPhone it's starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

It has been just madness. It seemed in the UK even the couriers phailed on pre-orders and stuff.
