MobileMe and push contacts

Ok, sorry if this is basic but I'm still struggling to get my head round some of MobileMe's functionality. I assumed that push would allow my contacts to be updated anywhere to my phone and all my systems. However, whenever I activate push for contacts on my iPhone it simply clears all of the contacts in my address book which have been put there from iTunes. I have to switch it off and then re-sync with iTunes to get them back. How can i keep them all there and THEN activate Push to keep them updated?

It sounds like your address book isn't synced to mobileme. What happens if you look at mobileme's webapp contacts?

Apple has online instructions on how to do this. Sorry I can't remember where to find it, but here is the gist of it:

Your contacts, mail, calendars etc. will be wiped out on the iPhone/iPod Touch so you need to first make sure you have synced with your computer so you don't lose anything.

Then you set up MobileMe on your computer. Open MobileMe in System Preferences, then to the Sync tab. Enable the syncing for your contacts and whatever else you want and do a sync. Now your computer info is synced to MobileMe.

Set up MobileMe on your iPhone and it will replace your phone's with the MobileMe sync you just did from your computer. From now on, the 3 will stay the same: iPhone, Computer, MobileMe web interface.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks jabohn, that worked. First sync before push was activated the iPhone HAS to sit in the cradle.
