Final 3g iPhone price after tax question

hi! I bought two 16 gb iPhones from atnt and the final cost was 671. I live in California, my tax is 7.83 in my town. I asked why my tax was 29$ more than what it's supposed to be and I was told that people still must pay for being taxed, as if I bought the phone at it's 500 price tag. Eventhough 200 was discounted for the 2 yr agreement, all must pay tax at the full rate and not from 299. Is this true, or did atnt just get over? Both phones were qualified upgrades. Thanks.

Yes, you paid tax at original retail price not the subsidized price. It's also the case for all other ATT subsidized phone.
