blank screen lag

I'm new to the iPhone, but there seems to be an annoyingly long time (2 or 3 secs) between selecting an app such as SMS, or Settings and the information appearing. Even 'Clock' seems to take ages to load. Is this normal? My Sidekick II was faster to use.
