I don't think Apple has too much to worry about in the design department. There are maybe two designs that I would consider anything less than hideous.

    So lets see..

We have weird VW Beetle looking one, a Larry King microphone, a bubble iMac, a Star Trek Klingon, an XBox, a bag of luggage, an idon't know what, a rackmount thing, a skyscraper thing, a blue blob, a green kidney, a mini iBook, ugh, I can't go on. Those are all pretty nasty.

    Lame-O-Rama.

Most of the designs are worse than just ugly: they're pointless. Ziggurats? Fins? WTF? Maybe half the designs seemed to address the "ease of use" theme, and none well.

Whatever Apple pays John Ive, it's not enough.

Apparently they're only hiring designers between the ages of 15-18.
