As Aqua gets tweaked toward perfection does anyone expect that the classic Mac startup "happyface" icon will be replaced with a happy iMac or just a simple Apple logo?
Nah. I sure hope not. Transitioning from a black-and-white happy Mac logo to a color one was a big enough change for me. I don't think I could handle seeing a totally different Mac there!
Besides, the Classic Mac is just that: a classic. It was THE computer that started this era (not counting Lisa or Xerox PARC). Sure, a lot of people may not realize the symbolism, but I'd say it's a nice touch for those of us who do.
I hope not too. There's a cool tidbit about Susan (can't remember last name) that appeared on Slashdot a while ago, can't find a link, and she created the original Mac icons.
Is it just me, or is the Happy Mac icon different in OS X? There is no shading on the inner monitor bezel, and it looks flatter. I liked the older one better. It still kicks Windows' a$$, welcoming a user with a smile instead of command line gibberish and ugly pixelated graphics
She did a decent job with what was given to her then - but with a much larger palette and 8-bit transparency - I'm not sure her work is still relevant.
The only real good reason not to replace it is because it's become more of an icon - it's an Icon.
It has gained much more meaning than just representing a Macintosh computer.
It's a huge branding thing . . .
Although, the Apple mlogo is still one of the most recognizable brands in the world.
If they can do away with the MacOS startup screen . . . then can do away with the Mac icon
well, good to know that it CAN be changed... but I cant believe that all the design genius they have at Apple and they come up with something like that lame
on the other hand, the 'original' classic mac that starts up now is horrible too. Has nothing to do with Aqua. When I do have to reboot and I get that screen, it just feels off. Blah.
The only nice thing is the Blue Aqua cursor... the rest of the 'hello' screen really needs something better.
J

I doubt THIS is what Apple came up with for the new boot icon. It's awful and not very Mac-like. It looks very homemade (and not very well done either). If they must change the icon, I think it would be cool if they just updated the original one with a more current 3D liquidity or glass-like look to it - leaving it as a classic Mac. Same thing for the start up chime. Clean it up and update it - not necessarily change it completely. Just like how OS X has certain elements of all Mac OS previous systems, so should the current boot icon and sound/chime.
a lil' thing I whipped up from that picture, the nose looks off a bit, but the pictures were taken from such odd angles and not head on
I don't mind the change at all. Although I do stare at it quite a bit because of 10.1.5, with two different icons I can recognize immediately which OS is booting. Quite a nice touch, really.
BTW, CubeDude, just set it to where you have to enter your password into the computer when the screen saver comes on and leave the screen saver on when you aren't looking.
Is that the new spinning aqua ball cursor?

Yeah, here's a clip of it I made a couple months ago. I think the new beta of Snapz that Andrew gave us a while ago captures the cursor properly, but I haven't bothered to test it yet.

THAT would be interesting.

It is different. Uglier, in my opinion. I wish they would change it. At least make it look nicer like the older, Classic version.

OS 9: there's a little shade around the monitor of the 68k Mac. I think that looks like a CRT.
OS 10: there's no shade ! I think it looks more like a LCD.
Restart and find out yourself !

That's brilliant.
I'd totally believe it, actually.

The face is a bit pinched and the "hello" type is sort of a weird font (well, a pixel font of sorts). But with any luck I'll see very little of it.
The start up icon is a piece of Mac nostalgia.
Hows about having a few different icons that the user can specify for their own start-up screen?
The chime stays!
heh
