I'm having a seemingly random .xls file show up in my left column in finder. How do I edit or otherwise remove it from the finder?

Well nevermind it as simple as dragging it out.
Not sure how it got there in the first place...

You were probably trying to drop it into the Documents folder, and it missed and wound up as a separate item in the Sidebar.
All items in the Dock, Sidebar, and Toolbar are aliases (shortcuts) and can be dragged out and "poofed" without affecting the actual file.
So your .xls file is still on the disk, wherever it was when you made the alias of it in the Sidebar.
