    WTF?

Are you also gonna complain that Mercedes are $50,000?

I really don't get people complaining on these forums. This is not Apple's headquarters. Wanna complain, go to the Indian Mobile Company that sells the iPhone and ask them. Apple places a unit price for an order. Less you order more the cost. Simple BUSINESS MODEL.

    Anyway, back to our story...

    300 times more? Exaggerate much?

The full price* of the iPhone in the US will be $600 for the 8GB and $700 for the 16GB. Vodaphone is requiring signup with purchase, but it might be a no-contract pay-as-you-go plan, which is the norm in India. That price already includes any import tax and I assume the Indian VAT. So the price isn't as exorbitant as it seems.

    * AT&T has listed this is as the contract-free price but they appear to be waiting until the demand dies down or perhaps when more countries come on board before offering it.

I too can verify this email as I received a similar response. (I got super fanboy geeked btw) I have been bit hard by this bug, and a downgrade to iTunes 7.7 seems to fix it.

That is true. I can't believe that nobody is talking about all the benefits we received from 2.02!

Screw September! My iPhone became self-aware after the firmware update. It keeps popping up message dialogs about "Connecting to SKYNET." and now I have a bunch of listings in my contacts for "Connor." I don't know any Sarahs or Johns. Hmmm!

Anyhoo, it now makes a mean Quesadilla, asks for my vodka preference and randomly calls escort services while charging someone else's credit card

If we're going to make it off-topic may as well go all the way.

I would gladly pay 300 times the price of the iPhone for this added new functionality

yes i do agree there is no contract system in India! But then its not priced good for the Indian market! INR 25k would have been reasonable... but its priced @ INR31k for 8gb...why compare contract system when it doesn't exist out here its not a fare deal!

When I was India last year the Nokia store near me had an N95 w/out 8GB for 35,000-37,000Rs and the Sony Store had a PS3 for about 42,000Rs. The country is really poor on average as their isn't much of a middle class to speak of. But he people that have money seem to have a lot of it so I don't think the price is outrageous when compared to other higher-end electronic devices.

I had to restore my iphone three times just to get mail to launch. Maybe apple should start hiring some people from the iphone hackers dev team...

It is interesting isn't it. Hmmmmmm....... Hacked iPhones work while the so-called phones blessed by He Who Must Not Be Named are in the shitter.

Nokia prices keep crashing each month....can we expect the same with iPhone i don't think so! and you are totally wrong on the middle class part! @this price too iPhone is gonna sell like hot cakes but on the lager view iPhone is gonna lose ground as Indian consumer base is not easy to crack! its a risk apple is taking

The Indian National Council of Applied Economic Research has defined 'middle class' to mean those earning between $4,000?$21,000 annually. That covers 65M people or about 5.5% of a 1.147B populace (CIA World Fact Book).

I'd call the class that should be the largest to be smallest to as "isn't much of a middle class to speak of."

Not had any problems with apps on both my 1st gen and my new 3G iPhone since I started to ONLY install apps using iTunes and not from the iPhone App store.

    Also,

Nokia prices are never high for long due to their product release schedule. Nokia tend to revise/replace products on a quarterly basis and always have done. Generally Nokia will do a production run of xx million units and then switch production to the next model. They are able to do this because the networks buy the handsets in huge bulk.

The networks are then left with loads of handsets that they must offload before the new models appear. Hence the quick price drops.

The iPhone will, almost certainly, be revised on an annual basis. e.g. more storage, better camera etc. I would also expect to see a budget/nano iPhone by June 2009 aimed for the pay as you go market which is huge in europe.

Back on topic, all of my third party are now unusable. They were working for the first 24 hours or so after installing 2.0.2 .Previously this happened intermittently and I had been able to restore functionality by reseting the settings and/or rebooting. Also, when this happened, at least a few apps works. Now none do.

That's depressing! Looks like I am up for an OS X install to get this .Mac syncing back to normal.

I was able to resolve the problem (thus far!) using iTunes 7.7.1 and the 2.0.2 firmware:

    1) in the iPhone tab in iTunes, disable syncing apps and sync - that will uninstall all apps

    2) manually remove the remaining 3rd party apps that step (1) didn't wipe

    3) undock and reboot the iPhone

    4) reauthorize your computer in iTunes (Store -> Authorize Computer)

    5) redock and re-enable syncing off apps, and sync

The process lasted several hours, but today my 3rd party apps have been behaving.

My guess is that some DRM file or certificate got corrupted by the aborted iphone app update, and that in my case, the computer re-auth somehow restored the certificate, followed by the app re-install, which probably re-signed all the apps with the new cert.

Henceforth I will not be updating apps via the iPhone app store.

Oh well, it only lasted until I rebooted the phone (this evening) - now all of the 3rd party apps bail out after 1 sec upon app startup ... really annoying!

In 7 years I've never had to repair permissions. What are you doing to your OSX installs that f*ck up the permissions on files?

I think this is two seperate problems. One seems to be whatever you're doing with your OSX installs to f*ck them up which frankly isn't the installation process, while the iPhone issue seems to be the inability of the iPhone to run apps that are owned by more than one user id if the above report of sshing in and changing permissions is anything to go by. IIRC the iPhone 2.x OS sandboxes the apps which would prevent access to other user's data just as 'jailshell' or similar does.

I guess I'm really sharing this with everyone because the bug bit me and I think I finally bit back. After having this problem every day I used this method to completely eliminate the problem and haven't looked back since, but I don't believe we're out of the woods just yet.

Sounds very interesting. Can you be a little more specific on the exact steps, e.g. "rename the file removing any numbers" etc... Thanks much.

Well you're right and wrong on this.

    Grammarbook.com has this entry.

NOTE: Although names ending in s or an s sound are not required to have the second s added in possessive form, it is preferred.

    Mr. Jones's golf clubs

    Texas's weather

    Ms. Straus's daughter

    Jose Sanchez's artwork

Dr. Hastings's appointment (name is Hastings)

Mrs. Lees's books (name is Lees)

However AP Style Book is the standard guide in the news business state that Singular Proper Names ending in S do not use the apostrophe. They even go on to use Jesus' Life as an example of how it is to be used. There are examples of exceptions such as St. James's Place. As great as Steve Jobs is, I don't think he deserves and exemption if Jesus doesn’t.

Both Grammar Book and AP Style

have quite lengthy entries on apostrophe usage. There is quite a bit more than what a 3rd grader would go over in class. Quite possibly more than their teachers know about as well. So while I'm sure that you got out of the third grade, I'll put money that the author has a bit of experience in writing and, because they actually used the correct rule for the venue, has definitely gotten out of the 3rd grade.

As for the iPhone I look forward to these fixes. I've been fortunate and haven't had to much trouble with my apple devices. Well except for the whole laptop hard drive dying on me in Iraq. My G4 PowerBook got a "Purple MotherBoard" during the Surge.
