12" powerbook hard drive issue

I've replaced the hard drive twice in a 12" powerbook, with success. The last drive stopped responding (no spin up) so I assumed that the drive was at fault. I returned it (under warranty with Hitachi) and they sent a new one. However upon installation, the drive isn't recognized (it does spin up though) in disk utility or any other meaningful program.

I am thinking maybe the connector cable is at fault (I don't think the ATA bus is messed up as the CD-ROM is functioning fine (granted that doesn't mean too much, but it is something). there isn't any noticeable damage (nor loose connections).

So the details are, I don't have the apple hardware test for this powerbook (v.2.0.2) which I was hoping to use for some diagnosis. (Does someone have an .img/.dmg they could share?)

More importantly though, can AHT even diagnose a faulty connector cable? I could go buy a new one ~$10 but it's really just a stab in the dark.

Any help or suggestions aside from buy a new MBP when they ramp'em up in Sept?

The AHT CD will not be able to diagnose a broken ATA cable. You will simply have to try the new cable and see if it solves your problems. If not, then the motherboard likely has a fried ATA bus!
